DON GREER

I woke up this morning thinking about Don Greer; this will be the first of many mornings where this will occur. This letter will reach many people who knew Don personally and some who did not, so here is a bit of background information on him. Don has worked as an outside salesman for Calvert for over 15 years in the Southern Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and the St. Louis markets. He has done a tremendous job of building his business and is widely known in the Industry as a force to be reckoned with if you want to sell wire to Industrial contractors in these markets.

The reason I woke up this morning thinking of Don, however, has very little to do with work. It has to do with his passion. I have known Don for three years, and during that time, he has educated me on a better way to live. The first time I met Don was at a customer event at Keeneland Racecourse; there was a group of 60 people and Don was everywhere. I was able to meet his father and his sister and to see the relationship and love they had for each other. That evening Don informed me that this had not been a customer event, but instead it was a gathering of his friends. You see, Don would not call on you as a customer unless you were someone he could have as a friend. I spoke to his fiancée, Julie, last night and she was reminding me how much Don loved his job and enjoyed the thrill of making a new friend or landing a nice project. It now seems very clear to me… if you work with your friends, you will love your job.

Don’s love of life was contagious. It was impossible to be around him and not be excited. He loved many things including his family, his friends, golf, seeing the Reds play, opening day at Keeneland, going to Utah, and the new life he was about to begin in Chicago with Julie.

He had more friends and the biggest personality of anyone I have ever known, and it was always a pleasure to be with him wherever we were. I know from personal observation that hundreds of others felt exactly the same way, and it was always amazing how many of my friends had met Don once, but would frequently ask me, “ How is Don doing? “. My answer was always the same, “He is doing great”.

Don Greer passed away Monday night in his sleep.

He will be missed.

His life should be celebrated.
